Which ID do I need?

Not sure whether you need a Flyer ID, Operator ID or both? Use the guide below as a quick starting point.

🏷️ What class is my drone?

New drone models placed on the UK market from 1 January 2026 must have a UK class mark. The class mark helps determine which Open Category rules apply to your drone.

UK0

Less than 250g including payload. UK0 drones can generally be flown in the A1 "Over People" sub-category.

UK1

Less than 900g including payload. UK1 drones can generally be flown in the A1 "Over People" sub-category.

UK2

Less than 4kg including payload. UK2 drones can be flown in the A2 "Near People" sub-category if you have the required A2 Certificate of Competence, or in A3 "Far from People".

UK3

Less than 25kg including payload, with a maximum dimension of less than 3m. UK3 drones are operated in the A3 "Far from People" sub-category.

UK4

Less than 25kg including payload. UK4 drones are operated in the A3 "Far from People" sub-category.

UK5

Less than 25kg including payload. UK5 is an advanced class and requires CAA authorisation for the relevant operation.

UK6

Less than 25kg including payload, with a maximum dimension of less than 3m. UK6 is an advanced class and requires CAA authorisation for the relevant operation.

What about C0, C1, C2, C3 and C4?
Older or European-marked drones may have a European C class mark instead. Until 31 December 2027, you can generally fly a C class aircraft as the corresponding UK class. For example, a C0 drone can be treated as a UK0 drone.

If your drone has no UK or European class mark, it is classed as a legacy aircraft and the rules are generally determined by its weight.

🟢 Less than 100g

If your drone or model aircraft weighs less than 100g:

  • Flyer ID: Not required, but recommended.
  • Operator ID: Optional.

🟡 100g to under 250g

The requirements depend on whether your aircraft has a camera.

  • Flyer ID: Required.
  • Operator ID: Required if the aircraft has a camera.
  • No camera: Operator ID is optional.

🟠 250g to under 25kg

For drones and model aircraft in this weight range:

  • Flyer ID: Required.
  • Operator ID: Required.

🏷️ Need an Operator ID label?

If you need an Operator ID, it must be displayed on your drone or model aircraft. Your Operator ID should be clearly visible and in block capitals taller than 3mm.
